Restaurant Road Trip: Oxley House


ELKINS, W.Va. (WBOY) — For this week’s Restaurant Road Trip, 12 News traveled to Elkins to visit “Oxley House” inside the newly-renovated Tygart Hotel.

Oxley House Sous Chef Carlos Ramirez told 12 News that the community has responded well over the past two weekends and has left great reviews. “We’ve been non-stop, almost 14-15 hour shifts every weekend that I’ve been here,” he said.

Ramirez described the restaurant’s cooking style as somewhat of an “Appalachian-influenced, Southern-type of cuisine,” and added that he and his staff take pride in locally sourcing many of the items that they cook with.

“So I definitely think…it’s gonna bring a lot of tourists to the area,” Ramirez said. “The town is very small and unique.”

Prior to taking on this role at Oxley House, Ramirez lived in northern Virginia, where he developed his craft as a chef over the course of 12 years. He said that about six years ago, he started taking more initiative to learn about French fine dining food and working in upscale restaurants.

Now, Ramirez is hoping to bring some of that “big city” ambiance over to the small city of Elkins. He said that what he feels makes the restaurant truly stand out is its service, adding that it’s able to compete with some of the restaurants in larger cities.

“Working here at the Oxley House has been…a pleasure,” said Ramirez. “Everyone here is great, small-town hospitality is definitely real. I’ve experienced it in the past month since I’ve moved in, and…I couldn’t be more welcomed to the Oxley House and the Tygart Hotel.”

Ramirez is urging everyone to come check Oxley House out and “experience the experience for yourself.” He said that the restaurant is somewhat like an anchor to the community in Elkins as it “brings everyone together.”

“We offer a lot of different things than what you would expect at your local restaurants,” said Ramirez. “Whether it’s pizza, burgers—definitely better-sized entrees than you would find at your local restaurants around here.”

While visiting, Oxley House provided 12 News with a large-scale spread, including:

  • Herb-crusted airline chicken breast over a bed of mushroom risotto, with a side of collard greens and topped with mushroom sauce (Ramirez said this is his favorite dish to prepare)
  • House salad made up of mixed greens, bacon, cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers and homemade ranch dressing
  • Smokehouse burger with blackening seasoning, black pepper jam, caramelized onions and blue cheese
  • 14 oz. pork chop topped with bacon bourbon jus, Yukon gold mashed potatoes and charred broccolini

You can try some of these items for yourself by stopping by Oxley House in the Tygart Hotel at 206 Davis Avenue in Elkins. The restaurant is open from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
